History of the Shrine of the Sacred Heart

 
  
  1. Construction of the Shrine began on August 22, 1974.
  2. Dedicated on the feast of the Sacred Heart June 22, 1975 the 300th anniversary of the appearances to St. Margaret Mary.
  3. Founder of the Shrine is Father Girard F Angelo pastor of St. Raphael’s Church, Pa. now the Church of the Sacred Heart.
  4. Reason for building the Shrine was never made known.
  5. The Shrine was built with permission by the late Most Rev. J. Carroll McCormick, Bishop of Scranton. At the dedication of the Shrine, Bishop McCormick announced the name change of the church now known as the Church of the Sacred Heart.
  6. The Shrine was built on 40 acres of ground.
  7. The Shrine is visited by tourists from all over the United States and Canada.
  8. At the Shrine one will find the following:

    3. St. Raphael’s Hall
    4. The Sacred Heart Center
    5. The National Office of the Men of the Sacred Heart
    6. St. Anne Shrine
    7. The Tomb of Christ
    8. The Nativity
    9. The Tomb of the Unborn

 

  1. The Shrine is open to the public 24 hours a day. There are no entrance fees of any kind. There are no collections taken for the Shrine. Monetary gifts are accepted but not required.
  2. The Shrine is owned by the Diocese of Scranton and is part of the Parish of Sacred Heart. The Shrine is on church grounds.
  3. Designated a National Shrine- March 31, 1997, through the efforts of Most Rev. James C. Timlin, then Bishop of Scranton.
